Edward River pays tribute to Cr Connell
Edward River Council has paid tribute to sitting Councillor Peter Connell following his death on April 1.
Cr Connell was elected to join Edward River in January this year and council said he has “already made an impact”.
In a statement provided to the Pastoral Times, the council extended its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Cr Connell.
“His passing has deeply saddened council staff and fellow councillors,” the statement read.
“Having previously served as a councillor on the Deniliquin and Central Darling Councils, he was experienced in local government, and dedicated to serving his community.
“A father of four, farmer, pilot, teacher and aged care worker, Cr Connell brought wide ranging experience to Edward River Council.”
Cr Connell’s death leaves a seat vacant on the council.
The electoral commission has been notified and is expected to plan for his replacement on council “in due course”.
“Edward River Council must have nine councillors to hold caucus,” council’s statement said.
“The commission is expected to conduct a countback on votes cast at the 2021 local government election to find the candidate next in line.
“If all candidates who ran but were not elected decline to join the local government body, a by-election will be held to fill the empty seat.”
