David
like Sam, David found the lighting
conditions challenging. “It had to be one of the hottest and brightest days of the year – great for sunbathing, not so much for landscape photography! It was also extremely busy so, seeking somewhere a little less crowded, we decided to walk the long beach towards Bat’s Head.” This rock formation caught David’s eye, but a regular exposure just wasn’t working for him. “The direct midday sunlight was too intense, and the ripples on the water surface were too distracting. I instead shot with a Lee Big Stopper filter, which allowed an exposure time of 30 seconds to flatten the water; a Lee landscape polariser, which added a further two stops of light reduction and removed any haze; and a 0.3 soft ND grad to retain detail on the bright rock face. I decided to break some composition rules by placing the rock dead-centre, but I think this works quite well – and the reflection of the sun off the yellow seaweed was a bonus!”
