The sun was due to set at around 9:30pm, but the large cliffs meant that that light would fall off much quicker
on Durdle Door. Lining up a composition that would work as the rocks became cast in shadow became the challenge – as was finding a spot where there wouldn’t be any fellow photographers or tourists in the frame.
“I thought this viewpoint would work well, with the twisting circular steps to the beach leading the eye down into the main rock formation,” explains David. “I wanted to capture the last light on the grass in the foreground, but I didn’t want to lose too much detail in the archway in shadow. I used a circular polariser to bring out some of the colours and warm the scene, along with a soft ND grad to preserve a little detail in the sky.”
