Should I save my processed images as a 16-bit TIFF or an 8-bit JPEG? Hugh Pollard

That rather depends on what you intend to do with the file.

If you are just saving an image to show it on your Facebook page or a Flickr gallery then save it as a JPEG; but if you are intending to print the image, then a 16-bit TIFF will potentially give you a better result. There are more tones in a 16-bit file and this may mean smooth gradations are rendered better.

However, TIFF files are uncompressed and larger to store, making the JPEG much easier to use if you don’t have much storage capacity in your set-up.
