Going for the grain

I know most people want to avoid noise, but I’d like some grain to make an image look gritty. How can I do this? Andy Hardcastle

Most postprocessing software will give you some sort of option to

add grain into an image. In Photoshop you have various noise-adding options in the Filter menu; while in the free black-andwhite software Silver Efex you have the choice of various ‘film’ types such as Kodak 3200 TMax, and you can play with the grain sliders to manipulate the affect. If you are a Lightroom user, there is the opportunity to add grain in the Effects panel. You can control amount, grain size and roughness.
