RAID and BeyondRAID
RAID systems use ‘pooled’ disk drives to provide greater overall capacity and to protect against failure with ‘data redundancy’. Traditional RAID systems offer power and performance, but can be complicated to administer. Expanding capacity or changing the RAID level (number of drives and level of protection) will generally mean taking the drive offline and re-initialising it. Drobo’s BeyondRAID system sidesteps the complexities, allowing you to mix drives of different capacities and ‘hot-swap’ drives.
