Panasonic Lumix TZ100
£530/$700 Shorter zoom range, bigger sensor
Compared with the Canon SX730 HS, the Panasonic is almost imperceptibly larger, but packs a bigger 1-inch image sensor, translating to a 2.7x rather than 5.6x focal length
multiplier. The 10x optical zoom has considerably less range, equating to 25-250mm, but is still perfectly respectable.
A big win over the Canon is that the TZ100 boasts an electronic viewfinder, although it’s quite small with a fairly meagre pixel count (1.17M). Around the back, the LCD screen is fixed, with no tilt facility, but at least it’s a touchscreen, unlike the Canon.
Performance
Performance enhancements over the Canon include a burst rate boost from 5.9fps to 10fps, rising to 50fps for the electronic shutter option. Autofocus is faster, and the hybrid optical/sensor shift stabilisation system was similarly effective. Image quality is much more detailed and far less noisy than from the Canon. The TZ100 doesn’t offer the same zoom range as smaller-sensor ‘travel’ compacts, but the increase in quality more than makes up for it.
