Panasonic GX80 with 12‑32mm lens

£550/$800 It’s a downsized delight

-

The GX80 sits in the shadow of the Fujifilm X-Pro2 opposite – but in a good way. The camera body is much smaller and lighter, and the retracting 12‑32mm lens adds little to the dimensions and weight. In short, you can squeeze the GX80 into a large pocket, but not the X-Pro2. The downsizing is partly enabled by the Panasonic’s smaller Four Thirds sensor.

Handling is a bit less expert-oriented than in the X-Pro2, with most controls being accessed via buttons and menus, rather than dedicated dials. Both cameras have built-in Wi-Fi, but the Panasonic adds a tilting screen with touch-sensitivity, and a pop-up flash alongside its hotshoe.

Performance

With 16MP rather than 24.3MP, the GX80 loses out to the X-Pro2 for resolving power. High-ISO images are a lot noisier and long exposures are limited to a maximum of two minutes. On the plus side, the sensor-shift stabilisation is a bonus and 4K UHD movie capture is matched here only by the Panasonic TZ100. The GX80 is small and neat and you can get a good range of lenses.
