It’s fair to say that the Surprise View car park in the Peak District seemed inappropriately named in the pre-dawn
drizzle. However, this didn’t stop the duo of intrepid photographers, who wasted no time exploring the area with their cameras.
Doug started experimenting, as he does, with intentional camera movement (ICM) and multiple-exposure techniques to capture his emotional response to the landscape rather than a highly descriptive record shot. By midmorning, the rain had cleared and Doug found inspiration in a lovely silver birch wood. His technique involved layering three images together in-camera using a combination of slow and fast shutter speeds to capture the etherial impressionistic effect he was after. It wasn’t long before he was happily editing and printing his image on location.
Doug plumped to print his visceral scene on Fotospeed’s Smooth Cotton 300 Signature paper, which was developed in collaboration with landscape legend Joe Cornish. For Doug, this paper injects a bit of life into the image, especially with the autumnal colours he was shooting.
