Understanding how colours and tones will translate into your final black-and-white image can be challenging, but there are some camera settings that will help you to pre-visualise the effect before you press the shutter. The main one is the Monochrome Picture Control (or Picture Style): this gives you a black-and-white preview on your LCD screen, indicating how the final image will look.

Along with this, you also need to use the right settings to get the best-quality results, and also understand how the exposure and white balance settings you use will affect the final result.
