Drab sunsets

-

Why don’t the colours in my sunset photos come out as vivid as I remember? Colin Harper I suspect that when you shot them, you had your White Balance set to Auto. Auto White Balance can be very useful for some situations, but it can also neutralise the strong colours of a vivid sky. If you are shooting raw, it’s easy to fix but if you prefer to shoot JPEG, it’s more important to try to get it right in-camera. Change your WB setting to Cloudy or Shade next time you photograph a sunset, and you’ll see an immediate difference, as the image will retain the warmth you are seeing at the time.
