Nikon Coolpix W300
£389/$390
The W300 replaces the Coolpix AW130, although the headline specs remain similar. It’s still waterproof to a class-leading 30m and freezeproof to -10°C, but shockproofing gets a boost to an unbeaten 2.4m. Other additions include 4K video capture, and Nikon’s SnapBridge connectivity system. There’s also an altimeter and a depth gauge, along with GPS tracking.
The yellow colour of our test camera may divide opinion, but the body is well-designed, with good-sized controls and a large – if slightly slippery – grip.
If only image quality was as wellrounded. Shots are sharper than the Fujifilm’s, but the W300 can’t resolve as much fine detail as the Olympus or Ricoh cameras. It regains some ground with clean high-ISO shots, and the wide 5x 24-120mm-equivalent lens packs optical stabilisation that keeps images very sharp at full zoom.
Pros: Crammed with up-to-date features; good lens; a pleasure to use
Pros: Average image quality; huge price hike over the old Coolpix AW130
