With the Overlay Blending
Mode selected, painting in tones that are darker than the mid-grey will result in an increase in shadow contrast, so press B to select the Brush tool, then D to get black as your foreground colour. In the
Options bar, reduce Opacity to a low value of 10% to allow you to build up the effect gradually, then paint into any areas where you want to make the shadows darker still. Control your brush size with [ and ] and make successive sweeps of the brush to thicken the result and give a darker tone.
