Dodge the highlights

-

Create a new layer with Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+N, and fill it with 50% Gray. Rename the new grey layer to ‘Dodge’, then swap your foreground colour to white by pressing X. In the Layers panel, again set the Blending mode to Overlay, and in the Options bar, set Opacity to 10%. Using a soft-edged brush, paint into the new layer to brighten any lighter areas and boost highlight contrast. Just as with the Burn layer, successive brush strokes create a more pronounced effect. If you go too far and start to lose detail, simply swap to a black brush and paint over the error to tone it down. With this method, you can quickly apply local contrast wherever you want it.
