AThere are lots of things I could suggest that would be useful for portrait photography, such as a flashgun, backdrops and lighting gels; but for me, the item that is used most often is a reflector. Whether you are using a flashgun, studio light or natural light to illuminate your subject, a reflector can be used to enhance the finished results by redirecting and controlling the light. I prefer a simple white or silver reflector, but a gold reflector can also be handy for creating warmer tones. Many reflectors come with all of these different options.
