How to get the look

Add a Curves adjustment layer

Curves is a fantastic tool to boost or reduce the contrast in your image. You’re aiming for a washed-out look; starting at the bottom left-hand side of the graph, push the curve up slightly.

Convert your image to black and white

Add a Black & White adjustment layer. You can then individually slide the colour channels up and down until you’re happy with the result. As we wanted to isolate our flowers against a lighter background, we selected the Green and Yellow channels to create the effect.

Add a blue fill layer

To get the iconic blue cyanotype effect, add a new layer and go to Edit > Fill, select Color from the Use menu and pick a rich blue tone. Change the Blending mode of the layer to Linear Dodge and reduce the opacity of the layer around 40%. You can then go back to your two adjustment layers to tweak all the settings until you’re happy.

What used to take minutes in the darkroom can be achieved in seconds with Photoshop.
