Gaps in the histogram?

Have you ever noticed gaps in the Levels histogram that make it look like a comb? This shows there are brightness levels missing, which may lead to posterisation (where gradients break up into separate bands). Avoid this by shooting in raw and opening 16-bit files for editing. If posterisation is unavoidable, try adding a touch of noise (Filter > Noise > Add Noise) to mask it.
