Think it all through
Before plonking the tripod down just anywhere, Mike thinks very carefully about how to capture the scene in front of him, and what viewpoint to take… Composition
“Really think about what it is you want to accomplish. Make it your mission to find foreground elements that are going to help your image. This could be a tree branch, for example, or leading lines in the ice. When you’re in snow, try to look at where you want to walk, too: once you step on it, snow is no longer pristine, and this will alter your image.” Focus
Mike uses Live View to compose – and as his Nikon D850 has a tilting touchscreen, he can easily zoom in on areas when he wants to check the focus. “In terms of aperture and sharpness, remember that every lens is a bit different in terms of the sweet spot,” he adds.
