When you view an image, your eyes are drawn to the lighter areas first. So with subtle dodging and burning, you can take the eye on a journey around the frame. In landscapes you might want to highlight leading lines or burn in cloud detail; while with portraits, it’s often about emphasising facial features or an expression – perhaps to lighten the eyes or accent a jawline.
