Always use a duplicate layer

It’s always sound practice to carry out dodging and burning on a duplicate layer so that your original image is preserved on the layer below. This way you can erase the edit and start again, or lower the layer opacity to tone down the effect if you want. For colour photos, this also gives you the option to use the Luminosity Blending mode, which means colour won’t be affected by your dodging and burning.
