Capture a sunset scene at Port Isaac during the twilight hour

-

Challenge 2 Liz Kessler

Later on in our exploration of the North Cornish coast, we drove to Port Isaac, a remote, small and picturesque fishing village on the Atlantic coast of north Cornwall. Although sunset was very subdued, there were still plenty of historical lanes and clifftop views to explore.

It was low tide at Port Isaac when we visited, so although Liz wanted to get a shot of the water, it was a long way out, and she had to find a different approach. “While I was looking around, I noticed this chain at the back of the beach. It had a feel of being abandoned and forgotten about, and felt quite apt for a shot of a Cornwall bay in winter.”

True to her love of exploring every angle, Liz got low down to take the shot. “I quite liked the composition that the chain provided, leading the viewer down towards the sea,” she says. “The wide-angle view felt like it went hand in hand with a shot taken from so low down.” Thanks to the pleasing soft light around sunset, Liz didn’t need to do much processing to finish her scene. “It was mainly just raising the shadows, and a tiny increase in the saturation, to reflect the sky beginning to turn pink at the end of the afternoon.”

Expert opinion

We love the way that Liz has used low perspective, which makes you feel part of the scene. The use of a 9mm focal length really accentuates this effect, leading your eye along the chains to the water beyond.
