Getting a golden-toned finish

-

1 Convert to black and white Open your image in Photoshop. Press Ctrl/Cmd+J to duplicate the image on a new layer. Go to Window > Adjustments, then select Black & White. Use the coloured sliders in the Adjustments Panel to tweak your image and give it some contrast. Don’t worry about getting this perfect right now: you can adjust them later.

3 Pick an effect The default gradients aren’t quite right for photographs (although they are fun!). To the right of the gradients is a small cog: select this and you’ll be presented with a dropdown menu. Select Photographic Toning, then click Append to add more suitable gradients to the existing ones. You’ll now have a plethora of new gradients available. Click the small cog again and select Large List for a better view. Choose the gradient you feel is right for your image, I used Sepia-Cyan here.

2 Access Gradient Maps Via Window > Adjustments, select Gradient Map. In the Properties Panel of this new layer, you can see a bar with a dropdown menu showing the available Gradient Maps – but none of them are suitable for our needs…
