TOP TIP CONSIDER YOUR APERTURE
Explore your depth-of-field options and assess the different results
f/3.2 (narrow DoF)
This setting creates a much darker background, with the rocket a tad too much out of focus.
f/8 (medium DoF)
This shot has a good balance of foreground and background, enabling you to recognise the rocket.
f/32 (wide DoF)
With too much in focus, the viewer’s eye is distracted by the rocket and can’t focus on the character.
Plan your background
Even though the background might be out of focus, it is worth putting in some effort to create something, such as the rocket and buggy in this scene, that adds to the topic. A headtorch was pointed above the space buggy to produce a strong contrasting shadow, which gives the scene more depth.
From the moon to Mars
Shoot raw so you are able to edit and finesse your images. This image was changed using the Temperature slider in Camera Raw to give the impression of a Martian landscape, in honour of the recent Perseverance landing.
