Project 3 Widen your view

-

If you’re fixated on the idea that landscapes are about ‘big’ features like lakes, rocks and mountains, you won’t be able to develop your eye to see scenic shots in areas that don’t have them. Remember that you don’t actually photograph a subject per se – you capture the light reflecting off it, so good light will produce good landscapes anywhere. And if you shoot locally, you can get to a location quickly when the light is at its best.

Make a list of three or four prime locations nearby that reveal the nature of the land. Then, when glorious spring light transforms it at sunrise or sunset – or when the sun momentarily breaks through storm clouds – you can capture this story. Thinking in this way gives you the same advantages as anyone who lives in the Scottish Highlands or next to a lavender field in Provence!
