Better reflections

-

Q I was told I should use an ND filter when I shoot a reflection. Is this true? Charlie Weston

A A neutral-density filter holds back light – that’s its basic function. So it’s not always necessary to use one when you’re photographing a reflection. However, if you want to increase the exposure time – which, in turn, smooths out water movement, allowing any reflection to be more obvious in the finished image – then an ND filter is a good option for achieving this. The stronger the ND filter is, the longer the exposure can be, and the more a ‘hidden’ reflection can be revealed.
