Spot meter, continuous shutter and raw

Your camera settings can be the difference between a great photo and a mediocre photo while shooting wildlife in action, such as these cormorants diving and catching fish. Use spot metering to get a good exposure of your bird. Don’t worry if the background is a little bright: shooting raw will allow you to retrieve that in post processing. It’s easy to miss the action if you’re not prepared, so switch your shooting mode to continuous shooting, where you can shoot around 5-30fps.
