2 FIND FESTIVALS AND EVENTS
Be prepared and adapt quickly to create vibrant, captivating photos, even in chaotic situations
With so much of travel photography being about people, it makes sense to go to places where there are lots of people. Festivals are a great insight into local beliefs, traditions and culture. They’re often busy and chaotic, with tens of thousands of people moving at a rapid pace. If you’re there to capture pictures, rather than to just attend a party, it takes time, research, thought and concentration to get the photos you want.
You shouldn’t even try to photograph everything. Instead, pick out moments of excitement, drama or humour that say something about the wider event. I’m often looking for a standout moment, interesting juxtapositions or interactions between people.
Religious ceremonies, weddings, street parties, markets and sports events also offer great photographic potential and experiences. You can time your trip for a big event, or research smaller events in local listing guides.
