5 LEARN HOW TO DEVELOP AN EYE FOR DETAIL

Understanding a place often means picking out small details other people might miss

-

Small details can make a big impact. Over the years, I’ve photographed clothing, graffiti, ceremonial masks, arts and crafts, food, sculptures, plants and textiles, all of which can be a window into a culture and help tell a more comprehensive story about a place.

Spices used in a country’s food can be an insight into historic trade influences and an island’s cultural mix. Signs can demonstrate local humour or manners. Architecture suggests values, whether it’s simple or opulent. Clothing says something about people’s lives and priorities. Art might celebrate local and national heroes, like Frida Kahlo or Nelson Mandela, while statues, from Buddha to golden dragons, help you understand myths and spiritual beliefs.

You need to be alert and open to the unexpected. Keeping an eye out for less obvious details means you’ll return home with a deeper understanding, and a more interesting set of photos.
