Tech Check Minimum focusing difference in a lens

How to know how close you can get to your subject and still stay sharp

-

What is the minimum focusing distance of a lens?

It’s the distance between the subject (specifically where you have focused on the subject) and the focusing plane, which is the sensor of your camera. The focusing plane is marked with a symbol that shows a line through a circle.

Is minimum focusing distance the same as working distance?

No. Working distance is the distance between the front of the lens and the subject; or, if you want the effective working distance, that’s the distance between the subject and any protruding elements, such as a lens hood.

Why is it useful to know the minimum focusing distance of a lens?

Knowing the distance helps you avoid missing a shot because you are too close to your subject, and therefore the lens won’t focus.

How do I find out what the minimum focusing distances of my lenses are?

You’ll see it marked on the lens focus distance display, on the side of your lens.

How accurate is it?

Manufacturers list them in their specs as definitive measurements, but you may find a small variance from what’s stated.
