Blinking hell

-

QI’m getting highlight alert warnings showing up on my images in the camera, but when I upload the raw file, they’re not overexposed. Is there something wrong with my camera? Josephine Dauphin

AThere’s nothing wrong with your camera. The Highlight Alert Warning is just that: a warning. It’s telling you that you’re getting close to overexposure, like the parking sensors on your car tell you that you’re getting close to a wall before you hit it! The camera is taking its information from a JPEG version of your raw file anyway, so the feature is not 100% accurate, and when you look at your raws, you can see that’s the case. Treat those ‘blinkies’ as an early warning system rather than a definitive verdict on your exposure settings!
