Digital Camera readers show us how they’ve been getting creative at home

1 ‘Tulips’ by Donald McIntosh

“I liked your example of ‘A trace of fine art’ (page 64, issue 241.) My take on the technique was to prop up an plastic poly pocket just in front of the tulip. The backlight was a foot away with a fabric diffuser on it. I added a warmer glow in the edit, and really enjoyed the whole process.”

Digital Camera says:

We always feel a warm glow when readers feel inspired by past projects to get creative themselves. This image is beautiful, Donald: the simple use of three colours, the fine detail of texture on the poly pocket sleeve, a composition that leads the eye across the entire image, and a great exposure. You should be very pleased.

‘Nuts about nuts’ by Steve Raven

“Busy enjoying a nut that was given to him by my toddler – just look at the happiness on his face!”

Digital Camera says:

What an incredible angle, Steve. He looks like he was very happy to see you. 3

‘Windows’ by Colin Gleeson

“The light only hits this side of the building first thing in the morning. The pattern of the windows balances well, and the blue tones from the sky reflection top it all off.”

Digital Camera says:

Clean, contemporary and well composed, this could do well in a photo competition.

‘Lockdown Views’ by Molly Kay

“My great-grandad Jim during the first lockdown – I entered this into the National Portrait Gallery’s ‘Hold Still’ competition. Jim loves having his picture taken, and was more than happy to flash a smile. He’s standing beneath the rainbow my sister drew for him, to keep his spirits up while he was isolating.”

Digital Camera says: The juxtaposition of a happy subject in a sad situation speaks volumes. A true memory you’ll look back on.

5

‘Stepping Towards The Past’ by Mark Gilronan

“The views from the new footbridge at Tintagel Castle in Cornwall are stunning, but the bridge itself deserves some focus.”

Digital Camera says: This is a fabulous, dramatic capture of the footbridge and its surroundings, Mark. 6

‘Full Spectrum’ by Claire Wallace

“One of the ‘hidden’ tulip fields in Norfolk. This was the first major outing for my new Fujifilm X-T3; the colours were so vibrant straight out of the camera.”

Digital Camera says: Strong leading lines always make for great images, Claire, and we love the natural and rich colours.

7

‘Men at Work’ by Marie Brook-Smith

“I really enjoyed the miniature photography tutorial in issue 241. I love this type of photography and spend lots of time setting up different scenes.”

Digital Camera says: We’re loving the different scenarios these little figures are starring in!

8

‘Spring Storm’ by Melissa Richards

“A brisk stormy afternoon seemed like a good time to hit a local trail in Boulder, Colorado. The incoming snow squall brought up the winds and the birds, giving a rather ominous look to the cottonwood trees.”

Digital Camera says: This is a very dramatic landscape, Melissa – we’d love to see a black-and-white version.

9

‘Open for viewing: vacant possession’ by Bob Wilde

“I spotted this broken tulip in a churchyard. It looked like it was inviting you in – hence the title.”

Digital Camera says: It almost has the feel of a reflection or mirrored image. A great spot, Bob.
