TOP TIPS ABSTRACT ZOOM TECHNIQUES…
There are many ways to use this creative effect – here are a few suggestions
1 Use the lens on its own
Using a slow shutter speed, I started at 70mm to get my subject in focus, then zoomed to 300mm as I pressed the shutter. This created plenty of ‘bounce’ within the image.
2 Panoramic movement
Moving the camera from side to side creates a panoramic ‘glide’, generating a multitude of colour and tone throughout the image. Watch out for nearby obstacles!
3 Drop motion
Stand your monopod in a vertical position. Holding the camera strap very firmly, release the monopod while depressing the shutter button, and you will create a downward motion in the photograph.
4 360º rotation
Attached to a monopod, spin the camera by 360º. I found it easier to make this movement when the shutter was on a timer. Remember to crouch down when spinning the camera so that you’re not in view.
