PRO TECHNIQUE SHOOT A BACKLIT SPIDER’S WEB

-

ADD YOUR MORNING DEW

1

Find a suitable web, and make sure you have enough room behind it to position a small LED lamp. Don’t worry too much about fences or other garden clutter, as these will blur out in your shot – just make sure there’s room for a light!

Now use a very fine mist from a garden spray, and gently spray some water onto the web. Take your time, as it’s easy to go too far – just a light coating over the shape of the web is all you need.

BACKLIGHT WITH AN LED

2

With your web ‘dewed up’, frame up with your camera on a tripod. Place your LED light behind the web and to one side, so it’s out of shot. Take care not to break the web or any connecting strands while you’re doing this.

In Aperture Priority mode, set a wide aperture like f/4 or f/5.6. Focus on the web and take a set of shots, adjusting the position of the light and adding more spray to get the best possible results.
