Tone it up!

Go from colour to mono, then back again

-

■ Your camera probably has a selection of toning effects that can be applied to JPEGs (or previewed when you shoot raw). These are typically sepia, blue, purple and green. However, you may not be able to adjust the effect beyond switching it on or off. You can colourise images with toning and split-toning effects when you convert images to black and white, though.

Split-toning allows you to apply different colours to shadows and highlights. A classic combination is making the shadows a cool blue and the highlights a warm yellow. You can adjust the saturation of the colours, and bias the overall effect towards the shadows or the highlights.
