Create atmosphere

The challenge with any sport is finding interest and atmosphere. A great image doesn’t have to be peak of the action: it could be a moment of contemplation during a game, or the look of elation from the winner after a long race.

Sometimes it’s wise to isolate the subject, drawing the focus directly to the action; at other times you might have to shoot wider to reveal the narrative in the whole scene, such as a cheering crowd. The beauty of local events is having great access, often at no cost, so you can really get shooting.
