THINK ‘BACKGROUND’

You need a backdrop that looks natural and creates a tonal contrast or complement with your subject. That’s not always easy to achieve in the natural world – and if you are shooting at a zoo or wildlife park, it’s even harder! Avoid anything that looks man-made; if you can’t, look for a background that’s tonally even, so it’s much less distractin­g.

Both images below were taken at a zoo. On the left the two-tone man-made wall gives the game away, but the image on the right looks natural enough to have been shot in the wild.
