Less squint

-

QI tried a reflector for the first time to shoot some portraits, but it made my subject squint. Any tips on avoiding this? Stevie Cantrell

AIf you have the reflector square on, with the source light (sun) directly behind your subject, there’s a lot of strong lighting bouncing back into the subject face, so it’s inevitable they’ll squint. Try angling the reflector so it’s slightly to one side and still illuminating the face, but perhaps giving more modelling and not such directly intense light for the subject to deal with. You might need an assistant to get this right, as it does take a bit of manoeuvring.
