Helen Farlow makes the most of the great British weather to shoot interesting macro compositions
Like so many others, I only took up photography at the beginning of 2020, when we were all stuck in our homes. Out of necessity, most of my subjects in the past year have been in my East Sussex garden or the surrounding countryside. This has meant I have naturally gravitated towards nature, wildlife and macro photography.
While macro photography is an area that provides a very steep learning curve at first, there is also plenty of opportunity for improvement and interesting compositions. New subjects to practise on can be found everywhere; once you learn how to look for them, you’ll be taken into a while new world.
Garden macro photography is also great for taking opportunity of the ever-changing weather and seasons in the UK, where even bright sunshine or a rain shower can turn a flower you have photographed 20 times before into an interesting new composition. What began as a new hobby to fill a difficult time has blossomed into a real passion.
