10 WAYS TO ACE ACTION SHOTS
Action stations!
16 Continuous AF mode
This AF mode continuously focuses and refocuses while the camera’s AF button is engaged, making it ideal for moving subjects.
17 Pan for gold
Set a slow shutter speed then pan with a moving object as you shoot, to land a sharp subject and motion blur.
18 Boost your ISO
If it’s a choice between unwanted blur in your shot and a little bit of image noise, always opt for the latter.
19 Custom cues
Assign custom function buttons to suit your shooting style, so that you can easily change settings on the fly.
20 Pre-focus prep
Lock focus on a marker. As your subject hits this point, you can fire the shutter without having to focus first.
21 Rear curtain
Use this setting to fire the flash at the end of the exposure, freezing your subject after the motion blur.
22 Raw and JPEG
Shoot in both formats so you can quickly upload images from action-packed events as they happen.
23 Choose wideangle lenses
Wide focal lengths allow you to get closer to the action and squeeze in plenty of context.
24 Think HSS
Use high-speed sync to flash subjects in natural light when your shutter speed exceeds the native sync speed.
25 Aim for the head
Unless it’s obscured by something, the head (or helmet) of your subject is almost always the best place to focus.
