24 Selection of torches

It’s essential to have an assortment of torches when you shoot at night: they’re great for seeing where you’re stepping en route to your next location, for illuminating your foreground to balance the exposure, and for light painting. Always carry a few in your kit bag.

25 Smartphone apps

There’s a whole host of apps that makes shooting at night even easier. Some of our favourites are PhotoPills, StarTracker, Star Walk, Moon Phase Calendar and Polar Alignment. We particularly like Star Walk, which uses augmented reality to let you see where the Milky Way is.
