Historically, Elinchrom stuck with variable-voltage flash in its battery-powered heads for optimum performance – but three variants of each head were required, for standard, high-speed sync and ultra-shortduration flash. The ELB 500 employs IGBT (insulated-gate bipolar transistor) technology, as used in the other battery-powered kits on test, enabling all three options from a single head.

The Elinchrom has a separate flash head and power pack. The latter includes the control panel: this enables the flash head to be small and light, while still packing a punch.

Performance

Maximum power output in standard flash mode is the strongest of any battery-powered kit on test.
