Free up your flashgun with a hotshoe trigger

-

If you want to take a flashgun off the camera, then you’ll need a way of operating and triggering it remotely. A wireless transmitter is a convenient way to do this. You’ll need a wireless receiver for the flashgun, but many come with this already built in.

There are two flavours of wireless control: optical and radio. Optical uses infrared light to trigger a remote flashgun, which can be problematic if you’re shooting in bright light, or if the transmitter and receiver cannot ‘see’ each other (or there are no walls or ceiling for the beam of light to be reflected off). Radio is more convenient, as there’s no need for ‘line of sight’ communication, and you can hide the flashgun in a fully enclosed softbox or behind objects in the scene that you’re shooting.
