Have confidence when you approach people – if you ask someone and it sounds like you know what you’re doing, or you can show your work on a website or social media page, then they’re more likely to agree. A refusal isn’t the end of the world, though. Thank them, forget about it and move on to someone else. Have your camera ready – you can always fire off a test shot before you approach the general area, so your exposure settings will be pretty close to perfect before you finally take the portrait.
