PRO ADVICE GET DOWN TO WATER LEVEL

-

To bag successful shots of frogs, you need to get down to their eye level, which at times will be just centimetres above the waterline. It’s not always comfortable to do this, but the rewards from this angle of view far outweigh any discomfort you might suffer.

Depending on how obliging the frogs are, you can use any lens so be prepared to use a telephoto, a macro lens, or even a wide-angle to create something different! Use a single Autofocus point with your camera’s AF mode set to Continuous – it’s important to lock focus on those large eyes as they appear above the water’s surface.

Keep shutter speeds fast to compensate for any wobble you may introduce – this is quite likely due to the awkward handholding position. As a rule of thumb, try to keep your shutter speed above at least 1/250sec.

?? ?? Get in close to the action If the opportunity arises, try to get really close with a macro lens. Move the camera slowly, maintaining autofocus on the frog’s leading eye, and you might get something extra special – such as this frame of a frog popping its head out of a patch of frogspawn.
