What is Dioptric Adjustment?

We all have different eyesight, therefore the view through the viewfinder and the technical data we read on there needs adjustment so that it suits our vision. Otherwise, what you see when you look through the viewfinder could be blurred.

How easy is it to correct?

Very easy. Most cameras have a small, built-in Dioptre Adjustment wheel that you turn one way or the other to correct the clarity of what you see. Usually you’ll find it on your camera near to the viewfinder, but not always with a plus (+) and a minus (–) symbol marked.

How do I adjust it?

Look through the viewfinder and turn the wheel until what you see either sharpens or blurs. You should be able to see the scene and visible exposure data with equal clarity, so adjust until you find the sweet spot. If you are near-sighted then minus adjustment will be needed.

What if I can’t get a clear vision however much I adjust it?

In this instance it may be that your vision is beyond the adjustment range of the built-in dioptre. You’ll need to see if an additional accessory is available.

What if I wear reading glasses and my vision is different looking through the lens to the LCD?

You’ll need to make a choice between setting the dioptre so you shoot with your glasses on, allowing you to check the LCD/Histogram, or shooting without glasses, knowing you will have to put them on to see the LCD panel. As Dioptre Adjustment takes seconds, you could decide which you prefer, depending on how much exposure checking you think you’ll need to do.

How often should I check it?

Do it as necessary. If what you see through the viewfinder isn’t clear enough, adjust it to increase clarity. It is possible for the Dioptre wheel to get moved accidentally too, or if someone borrows your camera, they may change it for their eyesight.
