Shoot a captivating portrait

Challenge 3 Alistair Campbell

-

Now it was out to The Entrance Hall to shoot with ‘Charleston Chap’ Lee Hoy, who was capable of movements that Fred Astaire would be proud of. With an array of Rotolight Titan lights in position, our shooters were spoilt for lighting choice. After a few dynamic portraits, Alistair asked Lee to grab a seat just outside the main setting, and then spun a couple of the lights around.

“Lee was full of energy and obviously a very talented dancer. I like to try to capture people in their purest form so asked him to grab a seat and not do much. I fired off two shots and this was one of them. In retrospect I wish I had introduced a third light with a neutral white to balance out the skin tones, but I just felt his expression here was strong.”

Expert opinion

Lee is a real character with a locker full of facial expressions, but the photographer still has to tease them out. Great work by Alistair on this and the lighting.
