How to create a strong portrait composition

Try the rule of thirds – it doesn’t have to be scientifically exact, but aim to get the eyes and main area of the face lying across one of the thirds in your frame. You could always use a grid overlay in your viewfinder if desired, but some photographers feel that doing this can sometimes impede the view of what you’re shooting.
