3 MASTER SUN-DRENCHED DEER SHOTS IN AUTUMN

Don’t get stuck in a rut! Bank some expert advice for beautiful backlit deer shots

-

Autumn brings with it shorter days, making it more accessible to shoot at sunrise or sunset. This can be 7am or 6:30pm respectively, compared to 4:37am or 9:28pm in mid-June. This makes it easier to shoot in the golden hour: the hour after sunrise, or before sunset, where the sun sits low in the sky and bathes your photos in a magical golden glow.

Autumn also ushers in the rutting season, so why not combine the two? Deer and stags make for majestic subjects, and to emphasise the golden glow we recommend shooting towards the sun to backlight the deer, which creates a striking silhouette, heaps of flare and loads of golden light.

Never shoot through an optical viewfinder when pointing your camera towards the sun, so compose using Live View on your LCD screen instead. Here are some more tips to help you get stunning autumnal deer shots…
