1 Backlighting
Getting into a position where the sun is low and directly behind the deer has backlit it, producing a contrast-rich silhouette and rim lighting around the stag’s profile.
2 Underexpose the scene
It’s a good idea to underexpose your shots when shooting towards the sun, to make sure the beautiful golden tones don’t burn out. If you want to make exposure a little easier, you can compose your shots so that the sun isn’t in the frame.
3 The golden hour
Shooting in the ‘golden hour’, the hour just after sunrise or before sunset, will bathe your scene in beautiful golden light, provided the sun isn’t blocked by cloud cover. It’s a fantastic way to make your wildlife shots look vibrant.
