They wanted to create intelligent refrigerators that would help your food go the distance (and lock in those vital nutrients) by keeping it at a consistent temperature. Temperature fluctuations happen all the time in refrigerators, caused by anything from the door opening to how much food is stored and the climate outside. The answer? Washing machines. That’s right; they decided to take the cutting-edge technology they pioneered in their Smartdrive™ washing machines – which respond intelligently to different laundry loads – and apply it to their refrigerators.

They combined temperature sensors in the refrigerators with electronics that vary the speed of twin cooling fans to create a more controlled storage environment they’ve called Activesmart™ Technology. This allows the temperature to change when conditions alter, the door is opened, or new food is stored inside. Together with the Humidity Control System in the produce bins, the consistent temperature delivered by Activesmart™ Technology creates the perfect microclimate which helps keep food fresher for longer.
